I like to share what I have learned and have a lot of experience as a teacher. At the moment I am teaching as a short course tutor at West Dean College, near Chichester, at the Royal West of England Academy Drawing School, at Salcombe Art Club, Devon, at Hawkwood College, near Stroud, and at various other places in the UK, in Norway, Holland and Germany. I also teach at my studio just outside Nailsworth in South Gloucestershire.

I welcome all levels of ability for my two day studio course - with tools, woodblock, ink, paper and all basic materials provided. In these two days I will cover those aspects of the technique necessary for you to make woodblock prints at home or at your own studio. I charge £300 for the course for two students, and you will get plenty of personal attention and assistance, as well as tea and coffee! Use the contact form on this website to make a booking.

TESTIMONIALS for teaching

Anne Chester King, artist, South Devon - student on woodblock printmaking course at Salcombe Art Club, December 2019

Dear Rod

I wanted to thank you for running a really fantastic woodblock course today. I drove home and thought about it and several things came to mind .
Firstly you are an excellent and generous teacher and highly accomplished artist ( craftsperson) who really has the rare ability to work with your students at their level and meet their technical and artistic needs. I had taken on something rather ambitious for a first time wood block printer!
Secondly you were rigorous in your standards and expectation - not letting me off the hook and pushing each of us to achieve work of a high standard .
I do hope I can do another course with you at some point and feel really inspired by what woodblock Printing had to offer . I look forward to following your work .
With best wishes

Ann

Rod Nelson course - Woodcut Printmaking, Patterns From Nature

The survey didn’t really allow for much comment so I’m hoping this can be added… I want to let you know how much I enjoyed the course with Rod Nelson. Right from the start, he created a warm, interesting atmosphere in which we were all welcomed and allowed to learn [from either a beginner’s level (me) or from a starting point of some knowledge (others)].

I was given the highest level of support I could have wished for - my own ideas were built upon and greatly enhanced from Rod’s years of experience. I felt stretched but also given scope to learn and develop. The group’s discussions were always interesting, conversations were fascinating and we all had fun, too!

This is a course I have already spoken about to friends and family and I have been encouraged to keep practising now that the course is over.

With thanks and best wishes to all at West Dean

Deborah
